Inevitable

I tried to stop water
From running,
So I cupped my palms
And held it in my hands,
But it kept on dropping,
Then flowed down,
Down to the ground.

I tried to stop sand
From being blown away,
So I cupped my palms
And held it in my hands,
But it slipped through
My fingers, and the wind
Took it away.

I tried to stop time
From passing,
So my fingers blocked
The clock’s hands,
But night came, the sun rose,
And another day
Has passed.

I tried to stop tears
From falling,
So I closed my eyes,
Giving them no way out,
But they pushed my lids open,
And mercilessly rolled
Down my cheeks.

Unstoppable moments,
Inevitable truths,
They leave us no choice
But to let them be.

  1. I like the parallels in the poem. Going from sand to water to time to tears. I'd like to know if the sand, water, time and tears tell a parallel beyond the physical. It's interesting either way, but I'd like to know more about the story that ties those things together.

  2. Sand and water were the first things that came to my mind when I thought of writing about the inevitable, about things we cannot change or can do nothing about. Since those two are things we literally cannot hold in our hands, I thought of using them to establish the inevitable at the beginning of the poem.

Then I wrote about time as something that we cannot stop. The passage of time brings about the inevitable things, and when it's hard for us to accept those things, that's the time when we cannot stop our own tears from falling.
