Knock knock

I look out the window,
Not minding the blinding light
Of the mid-afternoon sun,
Hoping to catch a glimpse
Of you.

But there's none.

I sharpen my ear,
Segregating the medley
Of sounds outside,
Dogs barking, children playing,
Your voice perhaps?

But there's only silence.

I lay down, bury my head
Beneath the pillows, wishing
I could just fall into a
Deep slumber, so I could see you
In my dream.

But I remain awake,

Waiting for you,
For that knock I know
Too well, the sound of your
Knuckles softly pounding
On our metal gate.

The knock that says, "I'm here."
But you're not.
